Half Past Eleven, Nothing I Want

This message is for the hunger that shows up as scrolling at half past eleven for something you cannot name and would not want if you found it

The lamp in the corner had been on since it was still light out. Rachel switched it on at half past eight out of habit, and now it was half past eleven and it was the only thing burning in the whole downstairs.

She was standing at the counter in her socks. She had been standing there long enough that the tile under her feet had gone warm, which is a thing tile will do if you stay still on it, and she had not noticed it happen.

Her thumb moved. The screen changed. A kitchen in a country she had never been to. A woman folding a blanket very slowly. Somebody's dog. A song she had heard forty times that week, playing under a video of a road at sunrise. Her thumb moved again.

She had done everything the day asked of her. The dishes were in the rack. The lunches were made and stacked in the fridge in their identical containers. The laundry was folded, not put away, but folded, and folded counts. Her husband had gone up at ten and said goodnight from the stairs and she had said it back. A floorboard settled overhead and then the house went completely still.

She opened the fridge.

She knew what was in the fridge. She had put most of it there herself that afternoon. She stood in the cold light of it with her hand on the door and read the shelves the way you read a page you have already read, waiting for one line to be different. Nothing was different. She closed it.

Twenty seconds later she opened it again.

That was the part she would remember. Not the scrolling, which she had done every night that year and had stopped noticing the way you stop noticing a hum. The fridge. Opening a door she already knew the answer to, twice, in under a minute, in the dark, in her socks, with a good life folded neatly all around her.

She let the door swing shut and stood with her back against the counter and said it out loud, in the quietest voice she had, so quiet it barely made it out of her.

"There is nothing I want."

She had meant it as relief. She really had. It came out of her mouth sounding like something else entirely, and the sound of it in the empty kitchen frightened her a little, the way your own voice will frighten you when it tells you something you had not agreed to say.

She picked up the phone again, because it was there.

The lamp went on burning in the corner. Over the sink the pipe ticked once as it cooled. She stood in a house holding everything she had asked for, at half past eleven, hungry for something she could not name and would not have wanted if somebody had handed it to her.

Then she went up to bed, and the reaching went up the stairs with her.

The hunger will not tell you its name

There is a kind of hunger that arrives with no label on it. It does not say bread. It does not say water. It stands in the middle of a perfectly fed life and simply aches, and because it will not name itself, the person carrying it does the only reasonable thing available: starts offering it everything in the house to see what it takes.

That is what the fridge is. That is what half past eleven is. It is not gluttony, it is not weakness, and it is not a character flaw that got past your notice. It is a search being run by somebody who was never told the name of what they are searching for.

Jesus met a woman at a well at the hottest hour of the day, when nobody sensible goes for water, and He did not begin by telling her to want less. He began by speaking about her thirst as though it were the most ordinary and reasonable thing about her.

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.John 4:14

You are carrying a hunger God Himself designed, and He set no shame anywhere near it. I am not saying that to be gentle with you. John 4:14 has Jesus offering a woman water that becomes a well inside her, which means the thirst was never the thing He came to correct. The Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written line about a spring and sets it down in a kitchen at half past eleven, in front of somebody with her hand still on a fridge door.

Notice what He does not offer her. Not a larger bucket. Not a better rhythm for coming to the well, not a way to make the walk shorter, not a talk about how she really ought to be satisfied with the water she already has. He offers her a source. Something inside her that runs whether or not she can get to the well that day.

You have a thirst that only a spring answers, and Scripture calls the spring a gift rather than a wage. That word gift is doing real work in the sentence. The Holy Spirit does not hand out living water on a sliding scale according to how well a person has managed their appetite this month. He hands it to the thirsty, which is why the thirsty are the only people in the story who ever get any.

Why I will not name the thing you wanted

I could name it. I have a fair guess. So do you, which is why your mind supplied something the moment you started reading, and it probably supplied it with a small flinch attached.

I am leaving it unnamed on purpose, because the second I name one thing, you will hold yours up beside it and start doing arithmetic on whether yours is as respectable as the one on the page. That arithmetic has never fed anybody, and it is not what tonight is for.

So the thing stays unnamed and the ache stays real. Here is what I will say about it. The thing you reached for and got, the one that went quiet on you within the week, was not a mistake, and the disappointment was not a lesson being delivered to you. Nobody was teaching you something by letting it go flat. It went flat because it was a cistern, and cisterns do that, and yours was never going to be the one exception in the history of the world.

You were made with a floor under your wanting that no created thing was ever built to reach. Psalm 42:2 has the psalmist saying his soul thirsts for God, the living God, and he says it in the middle of a life with plenty of other good things in it. The Holy Spirit is the One who keeps that written line from curdling into a scolding, because the same Spirit who breathed it through David is the One standing beside you now with water rather than with a lecture.

There is a real difference between being corrected and being fed, and most of us have only ever been offered the first one. Correction says the wanting is the problem. Feeding says the wanting is a mouth, and here is something to put in it.

This is yours tonight, and it is not a reward for having reached better: a well, not a cup that somebody refills for you when they happen to remember. The written word calls it a well of water springing up, which is the language of something that runs on its own supply. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that more than a nice sentence in an old book, and He does it in ordinary rooms, at ordinary hours, for people standing in their socks.

The breakthrough

So here is the table, and it is set exactly where you are standing.

Stop trying to feel differently about the hunger. That is not the move tonight and it never was. Take the hunger instead and point it. Say it out loud if you can, in whatever voice you have left at this hour: Lord Jesus, I am thirsty and I have been reaching all evening. Give me the water You spoke about.

That is the whole of it. No second step, no qualification round, no waiting until you are the sort of person who deserves an answer.

You are receiving right now, in this room, at this hour, and the receiving does not wait on your mood improving first. Isaiah 55:1 says come to the waters, and it says it to everyone who thirsts, and it names no price at the door. The Holy Spirit is the One pouring, and He has never once checked a person's record before He filled their hands.

Something is being given to you as you read this. Not an idea about being given something. Given.

You have been handed a source, and a source is a settled thing rather than a mood you have to keep propped up at eleven at night. The word says the water becomes a well inside the one who drinks it, and a well is not something a person carries, it is something that runs. The Holy Spirit is the One who keeps it running while you sleep, while you are dull, while you are standing at a counter having forgotten every good thing you ever knew.

The wanting may come back. I am not going to tell you it will not, because I would be promising you something the word never promised. What is settled is that He satisfies the longing soul, that He is doing it tonight, and that the well does not run down while you sleep.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, wherever half past eleven finds you. The standing to say them was given to you in Christ when He took you as His own, so it does not rest on your having named the thing you were looking for. John 4:14 is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying them. The mountain here is the sentence that says you are broken, and Jesus told us a mountain is spoken to, so speak to it and then speak to Him. What tomorrow night looks like is His, and I leave the outcome with Him; nothing here promises the scrolling will not start again. What is settled is that the water He gives becomes a well inside a person, and it is already in you.

  1. Counter at half past eleven, you are not where my life gets decided. The God who gives water that becomes a well inside a person has already set something in front of me tonight, and I am receiving it standing right here in my socks.
  2. Sentence that says I am broken, you were never spoken over me by God. In the name of Jesus, get out of this kitchen and off my chest, because the thirst you called a defect is the very thing that qualifies me to drink.
  3. Lord Jesus, You called Yourself the giver of living water, and I am taking You at Your word tonight. You are filling me while I stand here, and I am drinking slowly and going up to bed fed.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
