I Heard It As a Rebuke

This message is for hearing I have learned to be content as a rebuke aimed at you, rather than as a testimony from a man who wrote it in a prison

She is genuinely glad for her friend. That is the part nobody would believe if she tried to explain it, so she has stopped trying.

She spent the whole afternoon there. She admired the room with the good light, and she meant it. She held the new cup with both hands the way you do when somebody is watching to see if you like it, and she did like it. She laughed at the right places and stayed an hour longer than she meant to and hugged her friend at the door and said come and see mine soon, and meant that too.

Then she got in the car.

The ledger starts about four minutes in. It always starts about four minutes in, somewhere around the second stoplight, and it runs quietly the whole way, and it is not loud enough to be called a thought. It is more like arithmetic happening in another room. Her friend, and her. That room, and this one. The way the light came in over there.

She parks. She goes up. She lets herself into the place she has lived in for six years, and she stands in the middle of it with her coat still on, and she looks at her one window, and out of her comes the flattest, truest sentence she has said all day.

I want that.

It is out before she can dress it. And she is not proud of it and she is not ashamed of it either, not yet, because for about a second and a half it is just a true thing standing in a room.

Then the verse arrives.

It arrives in her own voice, which is the worst thing about it. She learned it at eleven and has heard it a hundred times since, at gatherings and over meals and once, memorably, from somebody who said it to her kindly while she was crying. I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

And that is that. The true sentence gets taken off her like a coat somebody decided was inappropriate. She apologizes to God, out loud, standing in her coat under her one window. She says she is sorry for being like this. She says she knows what she has. She asks to be made content, which she has asked several hundred times, and she puts the kettle on and does not really want the tea.

And the ledger does not stop. It never stops when she does that. It just goes quiet enough to be ignorable, and it is still running when she turns the light off, and it is running in the morning.

Perhaps that is your car and your window. Perhaps somebody handed you a verse about contentment years ago, edge first, and you have been cut with it every time you have wanted something ever since.

Find out where the man was sitting when he wrote it

Before anything else, let us put that verse back in the room it was written in, because the room changes everything.

Paul is in custody. He is not a comfortable man in a comfortable house writing advice to people who have less than he does. He is under guard, his movements are not his own, and he is writing a thank-you letter to a small congregation who had gathered what they could and sent it to him. He is writing to say it reached him and it mattered. And in the middle of the thank-you, he says this.

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.Philippians 4:11-12

Read the first four words again. I have learned. Not I have always known. Not any decent person simply is. Learned, which in his language is the word for the kind of knowing that only comes from having been through the thing, over time, at cost. He is describing a road he walked, and he is describing it from inside a place he did not choose.

You were handed a testimony and told it was a commandment, and the mix-up was never yours to carry. Philippians 4:11 has him reporting what happened to him rather than issuing an order to you, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a sentence written under guard and sets it down in a room with one window without a single blade in it.

Something happens to a testimony when you strip the speaker out of it. It becomes a standard. And a standard arrives at a tired person as a measurement, and a measurement always finds them short. That is not what Paul was doing and it is not what the Spirit does with the words either.

You are reading the words of a man who had to be taught, and being someone who has to be taught puts you in exactly his company. The written word says he was instructed, which is a word for a pupil, and the same Spirit who taught him is not standing over your one window with a clipboard.

He never says the hunger stopped

Now look at what he actually claims, because it is smaller than people make it and far better.

He says he knows how to be abased and how to abound. He says he is instructed both to be full and to be hungry. He does not say the hunger left him. He says he was taught how to be hungry, which is a completely different sentence and the difference is the whole message.

If contentment meant the wanting had gone quiet, he would have said so, and it would have made a much simpler letter. Instead he lists two states and says he has been schooled in both, and one of them is hunger, and he is in the harder of the two while he writes.

You are not disqualified from contentment by still being hungry, and the man who wrote the verse was hungry when he wrote it. Philippians 4:12 puts the word hungry in his own mouth about his own life, and the Holy Spirit does not read that line to you as a complaint about your appetite.

And I want to say the plain thing about the ledger in the car, because I am not going to shame you for it. Looking is how a person finds out what they want. She saw the good light in that room and something in her recognized it, and recognition is not covetousness; it is a working soul doing what a soul does. There is nothing to apologize for in the flat sentence she said under her window. It was the truest thing she said all day and God heard it before she was embarrassed about it.

What Paul found was not a smaller appetite. It was a supply that traveled. He names it one verse later and it is not a technique. It is a Person: Christ, who strengthens him, in the cell and at the table, in the abasing and in the abounding, everywhere, in all things.

You have a supply that comes with you into the room you actually live in, and it does not wait for the room to improve. Philippians 4:13 says the strength comes through Christ, which puts the source outside your circumstances entirely, and the same Spirit who carried a man through custody is not rationing Himself at your door.

The breakthrough

So go and stand at your window.

Not to fix the ledger. Not to argue yourself out of the drive home. Stand there, put your hand on the frame, and say out loud the thing you saw today and wanted. Say it flat, the way she said it with her coat on. Do not dress it, do not apologize for it, and do not follow it with the list of what you already have.

Then leave it standing there in front of God, and stay in the room with it, because this is the part where something is handed over and it is the part almost everybody walks out of.

You are being supplied right now, standing in a room that did not have to change first. Philippians 4:12 has a man in chains saying he was instructed in both fullness and hunger, and the Holy Spirit is the One who brings that same instruction into a place with one window and a coat still on the person wearing it.

It is already yours. The supply was not held back pending an improvement in your attitude on the drive home. The written word puts the strength in Christ rather than in your composure, and the Spirit is not waiting for you to stop noticing what other people have.

And hear this last thing plainly, because it is the one that keeps people. You are learning, and learning is not the same as failing. The written word says the man himself was a pupil in this, and the Spirit who taught him is patient in a way nobody who quoted that verse at you ever managed to be. The ledger may start again at the second stoplight. That is not the verdict. The verdict is that the supply came into the room with you.

Declare this over yourself

You are not applying for something and you are not defending yourself. You are in Christ, and the strength Paul named is in Him and has been given to you in Him, not awarded to you for how well the drive home went. What He does with the wanting is His, and however He answers, the supply is in the room and you are the one it came for. Say these out loud at the window.

  1. Ledger I run on the drive home, you are not the measure of my life. Philippians 4:12 says he was instructed both to be full and to be hungry, and I am drawing on the supply tonight instead of counting.
  2. Sentence that says I should be further along, you were never spoken over me by God. In the name of Jesus I take you off my window, and I stand in the classroom of a man who had to learn this too.
  3. Lord Jesus, You are the strength that comes into whatever state I am in, and I am drawing on You in this room tonight. Your word says he learned it, so I am done pretending I should have been born knowing, and I am starting from exactly where I am.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
