There are three long tables laid end to end under the pavilion roof, and the wind is coming off the water the way it does at that hour, and somebody has put stones on the corners of the cloth so it will stay down. Bowls all the way along. Two pitchers sweating. Somebody's aunt turning something over on the grill at the far end and arguing happily with a nephew about how long it needs.
And he is sitting on the end of the bench with a plastic bag between his feet.
In the bag: a sandwich he made at six that morning and wrapped himself, a bottle of water, an apple. He brought his own food to a table with four kinds of food on it. He would not have said it out loud, and if you asked him he would tell you he did not want to put anybody out, which is true, and which is also not the reason.
The reason is older. Every table he ever sat at sent him a bill.
Not money. Understand that, because it matters, and because money would almost be simpler. The bill was what came afterward. It was the phone call three weeks later with the tone in it. It was the way a certain uncle would say, after you ate his food, well now, and then the favor would come. It was the aunt who fed you and then owned a piece of you, and the family friend who fed him for a whole winter one year and never once let him forget which winter it was. Somewhere back there, in a house he does not talk about, he learned the rule that has organized his whole life since. Food is never free. If you eat what somebody set out, you are holding a debt, and the debt will be called in, and it will be called in on their schedule, not yours.
So he brings his own. It is easier. It costs him something socially and he has decided a long time ago that he can pay that. He is friendly about it. He laughs at the jokes. Somebody's cousin comes past with a bowl and holds it out and he lifts his sandwich and says he is all set, thanks, and the cousin says all right and moves on down the bench, and nobody makes anything of it.
And here is the thing he has not told anybody, and would not know how to.
He does the same thing with God.
He comes to God with a bag. He brings his own. He arrives having already sorted himself out as far as he could get on his own strength, having already worked up something to put on the table, so that whatever happens next he is not receiving. He has been in the faith a long time and he has served in more rooms than he can count and he has never once eaten anything.
Because if he ate, there would be a bill. That is what the whole of him believes, under everything, at the level where you do not argue with a thing because you have never noticed it was a belief at all.
And the wind is coming off the water, and the tables are full, and his sandwich has gone soft in the wrapper.
The bill was never money
I want to name the thing exactly, because a wound that is named loosely stays.
You are not stingy and you are not proud, whatever anybody has told you. You are a person who learned early that being fed puts you in somebody's hand, and you got out of that hand as soon as you could, and you have stayed out of it since. That is not greed. That is a burn that healed crooked. The rule you live by is not I do not want anything. The rule is I cannot afford what wanting costs.
And now hear who is actually standing at the head of these tables, because Scripture is not vague about His character on this point.
He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.Psalm 111:5
Read the tense. He hath given. Past. Finished. It is not a plan, not an offer under discussion, not something He is prepared to do if the paperwork comes back clean. It has been given already. And then look at the second half, which is the half that answers the bag between your feet. He will ever be mindful of his covenant. The reason the food is on the table is not that you have been useful. It is that He remembers an agreement He made, and He is the kind of God who does not stop remembering it.
You are fed on the strength of His covenant and not on the strength of your account, and there is no invoice coming after this meal. I am not saying that because it would be nice. Psalm 111:5 says He has given, in the past tense, and ties it to a covenant He is mindful of, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written line about covenant and sets it in front of somebody sitting on the end of a bench holding a bag.
That is the whole difference between His table and every table that taught you to be careful. Those tables ran on obligation, and obligation is a hook with meat on it. His runs on covenant, which is an agreement He signed with Himself and keeps regardless of what you bring.
You have a place at this table on covenant terms, and nothing on it is being weighed against what you have contributed. That is Psalm 111:5 and not my opinion, and His Spirit is the One who makes an ancient word about remembering into a plate that is actually in front of you this evening.
He prepared it before you got here
Now the psalm everybody knows, and I am not going to improve it. It does not need me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.Psalm 23:5
Thou preparest. He does the preparing. Not the guest. Look at how much of that verse is His verb and how little is yours. He prepares. He anoints. He fills until it spills. The whole of your part in that sentence is to be the one it is set before.
And notice where He does it. In the presence of mine enemies. That is not a peaceful room. David is describing a meal laid out in plain view of everything that wants him dead, which means the table was never a reward for arriving at a good moment in a settled life. It is laid in the middle of the trouble, while the trouble is still watching.
So if you have been waiting until things are more sorted before you eat, hear this plainly. The table in Psalm 23 is set in exactly the room you are in.
You are the one this table was prepared before, and the preparing was finished while you were still on the road here. Psalm 23:5 puts every verb in that sentence in His hands and leaves you nothing to do but be present at it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who moves that from a psalm you can recite to a chair that is actually pulled out.
And keep it a real meal. This is where I would lose you if I got clever, because the fastest way to leave a hungry man hungry is to turn his dinner into a symbol while he is still holding an empty plate. The table in that psalm has oil and a cup and food on it, and the cup is running over, which is a detail nobody puts in a metaphor. It is more than enough, spilling on the cloth, wasteful. That is deliberate. He wanted you to see the overflow before you started theorizing about it.
You were given real food by a real God at a real table, and the overflow in that cup was put there for you to see and not to interpret. Psalm 23:5 says the cup runs over, and the Spirit is the One who makes the running over into something you can feel tonight instead of something you agree with.
So here is what is true under the pavilion roof with the wind coming off the water.
You are being served tonight by a God who prepared the table before you got here, and you have His word that nothing on it is a loan. Psalm 23:5 says thou preparest, His verb from beginning to end, and Psalm 111:5 says He hath given and is mindful of His covenant, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying both of those out of the page and into a real evening in a real room.
Now put the bag down and take something off the table. Not later, when you have worked out what it costs. Now, while it is still warm.
And this is the receiving, so let me be concrete about it and not leave you with a feeling. There is something in front of you tonight that you did not provide. A meal somebody else made, or a roof you are under, or the plain fact of an evening you did not earn. Take one of those and eat it as His. Not as a thing you got away with. Not as a thing to be settled up later. As food, given, from a covenant God, with no bill behind it.
And the right to do that is yours already. You are in Christ, and Christ is in you, and the seat is His seat before it is yours. You have that standing right now, given and not lent, and the debt collector at the back of your mind has no right to stay at this table. Scripture says we were raised up and seated together with Him, and the Spirit is the One who turns a settled fact into a real chair with your weight in it.
I am not going to tell you the old rule will not come back. It may. You may find yourself next week doing the arithmetic again over somebody's kindness, working out what it cost them and what you owe. And that will not mean tonight did not happen. It will mean a wound is healing at the speed wounds heal, and a God who is ever mindful of His covenant is not counting the relapses.
What is settled is this. He has given, He prepared it before you arrived, and the cup is running over on the cloth.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with your hands open. The right to say them was given when Christ took you as His own, and you speak from a seat He bought, because Christ is in you and you are in Him. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries them, not what you have contributed this year. The first line speaks to the bag. The second speaks to the rule that has been running you since you were young. The third turns and speaks to God. What He does with next week is His and I leave the outcome to Him, and nothing here promises the old arithmetic will never start up again.
- Bag on the seat beside me, you are not what feeds me tonight and you never were. Psalm 111:5 says He has given food to those who fear Him, and I am eating what He set out and leaving you on the floor.
- Sentence that says I am a burden, you were never spoken over me by the Father, and I put you out of this room in the name of Jesus. His word says He is ever mindful of His covenant, and His Spirit is the One who set the plate down, not a lender.
- Lord, You prepared this table before I got here and You anointed my head with oil, exactly as Psalm 23:5 says. Your cup is running over on the cloth in front of me, and my hands are open, and I am eating what You gave.
