She has been standing in her own bedroom doorway for four minutes with the landing light behind her and one hand on the frame, and she cannot make herself walk in.
The house has gone quiet the way it does at about midnight, when the last small foot has stopped moving upstairs and the boiler ticks twice and then nothing. She has been waiting for this quiet since about nine o'clock this morning. It is the thing she wanted all day. And now it is here and she is standing in a doorway with her hand on the frame like a woman at the edge of cold water.
Because she has had a very full day, and almost none of it was hers.
She could tell you, right now, without thinking, what six women she has never met in her life did with their Tuesday. She knows one of them repainted a hallway. She knows another one has a mother who is not well and is being extraordinary about it. She knows what a woman in another country ate at four in the afternoon and what her kitchen looks like in that light. None of these women are villains. Most of them are kind. One of them she genuinely loves and has never spoken to.
And all day, in the gaps, in the four minutes here and the two minutes there, she has been out grazing on their afternoons, the way you eat standing up at a counter, never sitting, never a plate, never a meal, just handfuls of somebody else's day taken quickly while the kettle boiled.
Now the house is quiet and the appetite that has been fed like that since nine in the morning will not lie down. That is the thing in the doorway with her. It is not tiredness, she is used to tired. It is the opposite of tired. It is a wanting with no name attached, and it went up, not down, as the day went on, and the quiet has made it louder rather than softer, and to walk into that room and lie down is to stop moving, and stopping is exactly when it starts talking.
So she stands in her own doorway at midnight, at the end of the day she was waiting for, six feet from her own bed, and she cannot make the six feet.
And under it, the sentence she would not say to one living soul: everybody else settles. Other people go to bed. There is something restless in me that is not in them, and I have been like this for years, and I do not think it is going to stop.
Perhaps that is your doorway. Perhaps yours is the top stair, or the last light in the house, or the twenty minutes in the bathroom that everybody in your family thinks is a long shower. The day is done. Nobody needs anything from you. And you cannot put yourself down.
You were foraging, not spying
Let me say the true thing first, because you have heard the other version and it made you feel worse and it did not change one single night.
You are not a nosy woman. You are not shallow, and you are not weak, and there is nothing wrong with your character. What you did all day was forage, and foraging is what a hungry creature does when nobody has set anything in front of it. You went from one person's afternoon to the next taking handfuls, and you were not shopping for gossip. You were shopping for a life, because a hungry person will pick at whatever is within reach, and other people's afternoons are always within reach.
And I am not going to make the looking into the villain, because the looking was never the disease. Looking at other people's lives is how human beings have always learned what a life can be. You were looking for the same reason a person stands in a doorway smelling somebody else's dinner. You are hungry, not envious, and there is not one word of blame in this for you. Psalm 131 is written by a man describing his own soul at night with no self contempt anywhere in it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes an old man's honest three verses and lays them down in a doorway at midnight.
Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.Psalm 131:1-2
Now, people use that psalm as a stick, and I want to take the stick off you before we go any further. It is read as know your place, keep your eyes down, stop reaching. That is not what is happening in it. David is a man laying down a load he was never issued, and what is in his voice is relief, not shame. Things too high for me is not a demotion. It is a man discovering, at the end of a long day, that he was carrying somebody else's afternoon and does not have to.
You have permission to put down every life you picked up today, and it was never yours to carry in the first place. That is what Psalm 131:1 is actually describing, and the Holy Spirit is the One who lifts a load off a woman standing in a doorway rather than adding a rule to her evening.
A weaned child is still being fed
Here is the line everybody misreads, and getting it right is the whole of tonight.
My soul is even as a weaned child. People hear that and think: a child that stopped wanting. A child that learned to do without. A child that finally quit asking, and now lies there quietly, needing nothing.
That is not what weaning is. A weaned child still eats. A weaned child eats more than it ever did before. Weaning is not the end of feeding, it is a change of table: the child comes off the one desperate source and starts eating what the whole household eats, sitting up, with the family, from the same pot. Nothing was taken away. The table got bigger.
And look where the child is in that verse. On the mother. Not across the room proving it can cope. Carried, held, up against her, quiet because it is being held and not because it has been talked into being reasonable.
So read the psalm again with that in it. David did not quiet his soul by wanting nothing. He quieted it by being carried while he was fed. The restlessness went down not because the appetite was scolded but because the appetite finally arrived somewhere that had food in it.
You are the weaned child in that verse, and being weaned means you are eating at the bigger table now, not that you have been cut off. It is written in Psalm 131:2 that the soul is quieted like a child that is carried, and the Holy Spirit is the One who does the carrying while a woman who has been standing up all day gets to sit down.
And that is the honest answer to the doorway. The grazing did not settle you because handfuls never settle anybody. You cannot get quiet off scraps taken standing up, and no amount of resolve will make scraps do the work of a meal. What settles a person is being fed, sitting, held. You have a meal waiting on the other side of those six feet, and it is not a smaller life, it is a bigger table. The written word puts the child on the mother and calls that quiet, and His Spirit is the One who makes an ordinary midnight into that.
So here is what is true in the doorway, with the landing light behind you and the house finally quiet.
You are fed tonight at a table where nobody has to eat standing up, and the appetite that would not settle is welcome at it exactly as it is. It is written in Psalm 131 that the soul is quieted as a weaned child, and weaning is a bigger table and not a closed one, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying that written sentence into a hallway at midnight.
I will not tell you the restlessness cannot come back tomorrow at four in the afternoon. It may. Six people's Tuesdays will be within arm's reach again and you may take handfuls again, and that will not be evidence that tonight did not count and it will not be a verdict on your character. It is a hungry creature going where the food seems to be. What is finished is the idea that quiet is something you have to earn by wanting less.
And this is not a mood you have to work up, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and being carried is not a skill you have to get good at. You have the standing to speak into this doorway tonight, and it was given to you in Him rather than earned by settling faster than you did. The written word puts the child on the mother and calls it quiet, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes six feet of carpet into the shortest distance you have walked all day.
So walk it. Not tomorrow, when you have got yourself under control. Now, exactly as unsettled as you are.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the doorway or from the edge of the bed. The authority to say them is real and it is yours personally, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing was given to you and not earned by having a quieter mind than you have. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries the words. Whatever He does with tomorrow afternoon is His and I leave the outcome with Him. What is settled is that a weaned child is a fed child, and you are being carried, and the table is bigger than the one you were grazing at.
- Doorway at midnight, you are six feet from a bed and you were never a border I could not cross. Psalm 131 says the soul is quieted like a weaned child carried by its mother, and I am walking through you and lying down.
- Sentence that says I am the restless one, you were never spoken over me by God, and I put you out of this house in the name of Jesus. The written word calls a quieted soul a carried soul and never once calls it a well behaved one, and I am being carried tonight.
- Lord, You do the carrying and You set the bigger table, and Your word says the weaned child is quieted on its mother and not left hungry. I receive the meal on this side of the doorway, and my hand is on my own chest and I am lying down in a fed place.
