Only at Night

It is ten past two and he is sitting on the edge of the bed with his feet on the cold floor, and he is hungry for God in a way he cannot get anywhere near in daylight.

That is the whole event. Nothing happened. Nobody is sick. He woke the way he wakes two or three nights a week, for no reason he can identify, and the room was dark and the water was going about its business outside and he was awake and immediately, before he had decided anything, there it was.

He would not call it a feeling. Feelings he knows. This is more like a direction. Something in him is standing up and facing a particular way, and the way it is facing is God, and the reaching in it has no words attached to it at all for the first several minutes.

Eventually there are words. They are not good words. He does not pray at two in the morning the way he prays in a room with other believers in it. It comes out plain and a little broken, mostly one sentence repeated with different weight on different parts of it. And he means it more than he has meant anything he has said out loud in a building in years.

He sits there twenty minutes. Maybe forty. He does not track it. At some point he lies back down and he is asleep before he expected to be, the way a man sleeps after he has put something down.

And then there is the morning.

The alarm goes at ten to seven. The kettle. The news on low. The keys that are not where he left them. And somewhere in the fifteen minutes between the alarm and the door, the whole thing evaporates, and by the time he is at the second stop light it is not that he has forgotten it. It is that it does not seem to belong to him. It reads like something he watched rather than something he did.

By nine he cannot get within a mile of it. He has tried, sat down deliberately at a kitchen table with coffee and a Bible open and reached for the thing that was in him at ten past two, and it is like reaching for a room he was in as a child.

So he has drawn a conclusion, and he has carried it a couple of years now, and it is this:

The night one does not count.

He thinks the two in the morning version is not really faith. He thinks it is tiredness, the dark and the quiet and being alone with nothing to do, and that a hunger which only shows up when the lights are off is probably the same hunger anybody has for company, wearing God's name because that is the vocabulary he grew up with.

He thinks that the real him is the one at the second stop light. And the real him is not hungry for God at all.

And so a man who is genuinely being drawn, two and three nights a week, in the dark, has spent two years discarding the truest thing that happens to him because of what time it happens.

The night one is in the Bible

Here is the thing I most want you to see, and it is not an argument. It is a sentence somebody wrote down twenty-seven centuries ago.

With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early.Isaiah 26:9

Read the two halves and notice that they are in one sentence, by one man, about one God, joined by a yes.

With my soul have I desired thee in the night. That is your ten past two. He is not confessing it. He is not apologizing for the hour or explaining that of course the daytime version is the serious one. He puts it first, in the strongest verb available, and then he says yes, and, and my spirit within me will seek You early.

Night and early. The same man, the same appetite, at two different hours, and he does not rank them. He does not treat the night desire as the unreliable one and the morning seeking as the real one.

And he is not alone in the book. David writes in Psalm 63:6 about remembering God upon his bed and meditating on Him in the night watches. The bride in the Song of Songs says by night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth. There is an entire vein of Scripture written at the hour you have been discounting, and nobody who wrote it filed it under fatigue.

You are being drawn at two in the morning by God Himself, and the hour is not evidence against it. I am not saying that to be reassuring. Isaiah 26:9 puts the night desire in the same breath as the early seeking and gives neither of them an asterisk, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written line about the night and lays it over a man sitting on the edge of a bed with his feet on a cold floor.

And think about what the dark actually does, because you have been treating it as a contaminant. The dark does not manufacture hunger. It removes what has been sitting on top of it: the work, the noise, the small management of a hundred things, the people you love and are responsible for. At two in the morning every one of those is off, and what is left is what was underneath the whole time.

You have that hunger at nine in the morning too, and it is buried rather than absent. Isaiah 26:9 has the same man desiring in the night and seeking early, one appetite across both hours, and the Spirit is the One who lets a person believe that about themselves instead of assuming the daylight version is the true report.

It is aimed, not cured

Now the second half of this, and it is the part I will not soften, because softening it is how people get hurt.

The hunger is not going to be cured. Not tonight, not by this page, and not by any experience of God you will ever have on this side. And that is not a defect in your faith or a failure of the reaching. It is the design.

Look at how Jesus phrases it, because the grammar is everything.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.Matthew 5:6

He blesses the hungering ones. Not the ones who used to hunger and got over it. The blessing sits on people in the middle of the appetite, and He does not treat the appetite as a stage they are passing through on the way to something better. And He does not say the hungering stops. He says they are filled, which is what happens to a hungry person at a table, and anybody who has eaten a real meal knows that being filled tonight is not the end of being a creature who eats.

So do not let anybody tell you, and do not tell yourself, that a satisfied person stops being hungry for God. That is not in the book anywhere. The people in Scripture who knew Him best are the ones who ask for more of Him in the strongest language: show me thy glory, my soul followeth hard after thee, that I may know him. The hunger does not shrink with proximity. It gets more accurate.

You were made with an appetite that is aimed at God rather than one that is scheduled to end, and that aim is the point of it. Matthew 5:6 blesses the hungering rather than the finished, and the Holy Spirit is the One who turns a beatitude into permission to stop treating your own longing as a symptom.

And here is what changes, if not the hunger. What changes is the address. An unaimed hunger goes anywhere, and a person will hand it to whatever is nearest at two in the morning, and half the time what is nearest is a screen or a memory or an old regret with teeth in it. An aimed hunger goes to a Person. Same size, same weight, same ache in the middle of the night, and it arrives somewhere.

You are hungry for a God who takes hunger seriously, and He is not waiting for you to bring Him a tidier version of it at a more respectable hour. Isaiah 26:9 puts the night desire in Scripture without a word of apology, and the Spirit is the One who carries an ancient man's testimony into a dark bedroom as though it had been written for that room.
