Enough TonightIsaiah 30:15

Still Feels Like Losing

This message is for an evening where being still feels like losing, because stillness has always meant falling behind people who did not stop

He sat down on the veranda at ten past seven, which is the first time in a very long while that he has sat down outside while it was still light, and by fourteen minutes past he was up again.

Nothing was wrong. That is what makes this worth telling. Nobody needed him. The evening was genuinely empty, the first empty one in months, the kind he has said out loud that he wants. The light was doing the good thing it does over the roofs at that hour, going from white to honey, and there was a chair, and a glass of something cold on the boards beside it, and a bird making an idiot of itself in the hedge.

He lasted four minutes.

By the fifth his knee had started going. By the seventh he had picked up his phone and put it down twice without looking at it, which is worse than looking at it. By the tenth he had noticed a corner of the veranda rail where the paint has lifted, and by fourteen minutes past seven he was on his feet with a cloth in his hand cleaning the outside of a window that nobody in that house has ever once looked through.

And if you asked him why, he would say he likes to keep on top of things, and he would mean it, and it would not be the reason.

Here is the reason, and it went in when he was about nine. He grew up watching. He watched who got asked back and who did not. He watched two people with the same amount of talent, and one of them stayed at it in the evenings and one of them sat down, and the one who sat down got quietly gone past, not all at once, over about four years, and everybody was very kind about it and nobody ever said the word. He learned the lesson without anybody teaching it: the ones who do not stop stay in front. The ones who sit down get overtaken while they are sitting.

So stillness, in his body, is not rest. Stillness is the beginning of being passed. Four minutes in a chair with the light going honey over the roofs and something in his chest starts saying, quietly and reasonably, that this is exactly how it starts.

He would not say any of that out loud. If you put it to him he would laugh and say he is just not very good at relaxing, which is the sentence everybody uses for this and it is a lie, and it is such a comfortable lie that he has never once looked underneath it.

And underneath it is the thing he is actually afraid of, and it is not about work at all. It is this: if I stop, I will be left. People do not keep the ones who stop.

The window is clean now. It is nearly dark. The glass on the boards has gone warm and he never drank it.

Perhaps that is your veranda. Perhaps yours is a back step, or a car in a driveway you sit in for ninety seconds before you go in, or a sofa you have never once sat on without something in your hands. The evening came. It was empty. And you were up and moving inside five minutes, and you told yourself it was because you like to keep on top of things.

Stillness was never how you got passed

Let me say the true thing first, because the version you learned at nine years old has never been argued with once in forty years and it is about time somebody did.

You were watching real things. I am not going to tell you that you imagined it. You genuinely saw people get quietly gone past, and you were right about the pattern, and a child watching that hard is a child trying to survive something. The lesson you drew was reasonable. It was also wrong in one specific place, and the wrong place is the whole difference: you concluded that stillness was the mechanism. That sitting down was the thing that did it.

You were never overtaken because you rested, and the evening in that chair has never once cost you anything. Isaiah 30:15 is written down for a whole nation that had reached exactly your conclusion, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes an old line about quietness and sets it on a veranda at ten past seven.

For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.Isaiah 30:15

Read where the strength is. Not after the quietness. Not on the far side of it, as a reward for having managed to sit down properly for long enough. In it. In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength, which puts the strength inside the room rather than at the end of a corridor leading to the room.

That matters enormously for a man cleaning a window at dusk. He has been treating stillness as a cost, an expensive thing you spend in the hope of getting something back later. The verse says the strength is already in there. Sitting down is not the fee. Sitting down is the door.

You have strength waiting inside the quietness rather than out at the end of it, and it is not being held back until you have earned the sitting. It is written in Isaiah 30:15 that in quietness and in confidence is your strength, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes that written sentence and hands it to somebody with a cloth in his hand at nearly dark.

And ye would not

Now the last four words of that verse, because I am not going to walk past them and let you find them on your own later and think they were aimed at you.

And ye would not. The offer was made, and the people it was made to did not take it, and Isaiah wrote that down.

Here is what I want you to see in that, and it is not what it looks like. Those four words are not a rod. They are the reason the sentence survived. God said it, out loud, through a prophet, to a people who then went and did the opposite, and He had it written down anyway and kept, and copied, and carried across three thousand years, so that it could be read on a veranda by a man who has never in his life been able to sit still for six minutes.

He did not withdraw it when they would not. That is the character of the One making the offer, and it is the whole reason you can trust the front half of the verse. You are being offered the same rest tonight that a whole nation turned down, and it was not taken off the table then and it is not being taken off now. The written word kept the offer and the refusal in the same sentence on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes an ancient standing offer into an actual chair on an actual evening.

And notice what the verse does not do. It does not tell him to become a restful person. It does not ask for a new rhythm, a practice, a nightly discipline, a thing to keep up and be found wanting in by Thursday. It offers one thing: returning and rest, quietness and confidence, here, now, in the situation as it stands.

So let me be very plain, because this is the whole shape of tonight. You have one evening in front of you and it is not the first day of anything. Nothing here is a habit you now have to maintain, nothing here gets graded tomorrow, and Isaiah 30:15 makes no mention of consistency anywhere in it. The written word offers rest to people in the middle of a mess, and the Holy Spirit is the One who hands over an evening rather than a program.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true on the veranda, with the light nearly gone and the glass on the boards never drunk.

You are being handed one satisfied evening tonight, and it is a real one, not a decision to feel differently about the same restless hour. It is written in Isaiah 30:15 that in returning and rest is salvation and in quietness and confidence is strength, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying that into a garden at nearly dark where somebody has a cloth in his hand.

I will not tell you the knee will not start going again on Thursday. It may. Forty years of watching does not stop because of one paragraph, and if you are up and moving in four minutes tomorrow that is not a failed evening and it is not a verdict on you. Nothing here is being scored. What is finished is the idea that the chair itself was the danger.

And you do not have to work yourself into a restful frame of mind first, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and returning and rest came with Him rather than with a temperament you were never issued. You have the standing to sit down and say this out loud tonight, and it was given to you in Him and not earned by being the sort of person who finds this easy. The written word puts the strength in the quietness, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes twenty minutes on a wall or in a chair into an evening you were actually fed in.

So take it. Not once you have finished the window. Now, with the paint still lifted on the rail.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the chair, in an ordinary voice, and nobody has to hear them. The authority to say them is real and it is yours personally, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing was given to you and not earned by resting well. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries the words. Whatever He does with Thursday is His and I leave the outcome with Him. What is settled is that the strength is inside the quietness, and the offer was never withdrawn, and this evening is yours.

  1. Chair on the veranda, you are not a place where I fall behind and you were never the start of losing. Isaiah 30:15 says the strength lives in the quietness, and I am sitting down in you with the light still going.
  2. Rule that says stopping is losing, you were never spoken over me by God, and I put you out of this evening in the name of Jesus. The written word puts my strength inside the quietness and not out past it, and I am staying in this chair until the light changes.
  3. Lord, You put the strength inside the quietness and You kept the offer standing when a whole nation would not take it, and Your word says in returning and rest we are saved. I receive one whole evening from Your hand tonight, and my hands are loose in my lap and I am not behind.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
