His TableLuke 14:16-17

The Courtyard Gate Was Open

This message is for assuming you have to earn an invitation to a table that has been standing open the entire time you were working out how to deserve it

He has been standing at the corner of the wall for eleven minutes, and in those eleven minutes he has built and demolished four different sentences.

The gate is twenty steps away. It is standing open. Not unlatched, not ajar, open, all the way back against the wall with a rounded stone set at its foot to hold it there, the way you prop a gate when you mean people to come through it and you do not want anybody having to push. Lamplight is coming out of the courtyard and lying across the dust in a long warm shape, and there is noise in there, the good disorganized noise of a lot of people who like each other, and somebody has just laughed at something and somebody else has said say that again.

And he is at the corner, working.

Sentence one was, I ran into your brother last week and he mentioned you were having people. Too thin. Sentence two was, I brought something, which would have been fine except he did not bring anything, and he had a moment of real panic about that eight minutes ago and considered walking to the market and coming back, and the market is shut. Sentence three was about a thing he once did for the family, four years ago, small, and even in his own head it sounded like a man producing a receipt at a door. He is on sentence four now. Sentence four is worse.

Here is what he does not know, and it is the whole of it. Two hours ago the man of the house sent his servant out with a list, and his name was third on it, and the servant went to his house and found it empty and went looking, and the servant is at this moment in the next street, walking, calling out for him by name. Not a general invitation shouted at a crowd. His name. Being called in a street forty steps from where he is standing composing a reason to be admitted.

The gate is propped. The table is laid. The bread came out of the oven an hour ago and it is under a cloth and it is still warm. And the only thing standing between this man and that meal is a speech he is writing to a host who has already sent somebody out to fetch him.

He shifts his weight. He tries sentence four out under his breath. He does not like it. He thinks: another minute, and I will have it right, and then I will go in.

And the lamps burn, and the bread cools under the cloth, and the servant turns down another street calling his name.

You know why I am telling you this. You have been at that corner. Maybe you are at it tonight. There is something laid out for you and you are not in the room, because you are still working on why you should be allowed to be, and you have been working on it for a while now, and you have started to believe that the working is the price.

The servant is already in the street

Jesus told this one Himself, and He told it at a dinner table, which I have always loved.

A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, Come, for everything is now ready.Luke 14:16-17

Read the sequence, because the sequence is the entire message. The banquet was prepared first. The invitation went out second. And then, at the hour, a servant was sent a third time, out into the streets, to find the invited and tell them the thing was ready now. Three separate motions, all of them from the host, all of them before anybody at all had done anything to deserve a place.

Nobody in that story earned a seat. Nobody was assessed. The ones who ended up eating were the ones who came, and the ones who did not eat were not disqualified for insufficiency, they were busy composing reasons. I have a field. I have oxen. I have married a wife. Those are not sins, they are excuses, and an excuse is what a person makes when they have quietly decided the invitation cannot really have meant them.

You are on the list, and the servant was sent out with your name on it before you had a single thing to show anyone. That is not my warmth, it is the shape of the text. Luke 14:17 has the host sending word that everything is ready, before the guests have moved a step, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a parable told at a dinner two thousand years ago and stands it up in a street where somebody is rehearsing.

And there is the older table underneath this one, the one the shepherd king wrote about, where the table is prepared in the presence of enemies and the cup runs over. Psalm 23 does not need my improvement and it will not get it. I only want you to notice who is doing the verbs. He makes me lie down. He leads. He restores. He prepares a table before me. There is not one line in it where the sheep arranges anything.

You have a Host who prepared before He invited, and the preparing was finished while you were still working out your speech. Psalm 23:5 says He prepares a table before me, and the preparing is His verb and not mine, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries that difference into a person who has spent years believing the table was conditional.

What the speech is really for

Let me name the thing gently, because I think you already know it.

The speech is not for the host. The host is inside, laughing at something, waiting. The speech is for you. It is the thing that makes going in bearable, because a man who walks in with a reason has not been given anything, and a man who walks in with empty hands has. And being given to is the harder of the two by a distance.

That is the real weight at the corner of the wall. Not shame about anything in particular. Just the deep old conviction that a welcome you did not pay for cannot be trusted, and that if you go in with nothing in your hands you will be, in some small way, a beggar at that table, and everybody will be kind about it, and you will know.

So you keep working. And the working feels like humility. It is not humility. Humility is walking through a gate somebody propped open for you and sitting where they point.

Look again at what the servant was told to say. Not, come if you are ready. Not, come when you have found something to bring. Come, for everything is now ready. The readiness is on the other side of the wall and it was completed before the message left the house.

You were invited by name while your hands were empty, and empty hands are the correct way to arrive at this table. Luke 14:17 sends the servant out to say everything is now ready, which means nothing was waiting on the guest to finish anything, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that read like relief instead of theology.

And a beggar and a guest can arrive at a door in exactly the same condition. The difference is not what is in their hands, it is whether they were sent for. One is at the door hoping the household will make an exception. The other is late to something that was arranged with him in mind, and the whole house has been waiting on him to walk in.

You are not a beggar in that courtyard, you are the third name on the host's own list. It is written that he invited many and then sent word at the hour, and His Spirit is the One who takes a written invitation and makes it sound like your name being called in the next street, which is exactly what it is.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true at the corner of the wall, twenty steps from a propped gate.

You are wanted at that table tonight, and it is already settled, and the settling did not involve you. Luke 14 has the host preparing, inviting and then sending out again, three motions and all of them His, and the Holy Spirit is the One serving that word to somebody who has been standing in the dark practicing.

I am not going to promise you the rehearsing is over for good. It may be back at the next door you stand in front of. That is not evidence that tonight did not happen. It is an old habit walking into a courtyard that has changed, and the Host is not surprised by it and does not withdraw the cushion.

You have a place with a cup poured at it, and it was poured before you came over the hill. Psalm 23:5 says the table is prepared before me and the cup runs over, and His Spirit is the One holding that steady over a person who cannot yet believe a welcome they did not buy.

So put the speech down. Not as a resolution, not as a discipline. Just put it down and go in, and eat something, tonight, in your body, at a table where the bread is already out.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the doorway or at the table. The standing to say them is not something you argued your way into: it is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the place at this table is His place and you are sitting in it. Scripture is the ground under each line, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying the words, not the quality of the speech you had prepared. The mountain here is the sentence that says you must have a reason to be admitted, so speak to that first, and then turn and speak to God. Whatever He does with the next door is His, and I leave the outcome to Him. What is settled is that the host sent word that everything is ready, and you are the one being called.

  1. Gate propped open with a stone, you are not a test and you never were one. Luke 14 says the servant was sent out to say come, for all things are now ready, and I am walking through you tonight without my speech.
  2. Verdict that I am here on sufferance, you were never issued by this Host, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. He prepared the table before He called me, and His Spirit is the One who poured the cup, not the one weighing what I brought.
  3. Lord, You are the Host who sent somebody into the street with my name, and You have the bread out and under a cloth for me tonight, as Luke 14 says. I thank You that Your Spirit is not waiting on my reasons, and I am putting the speech down, and I am coming in and sitting where You point.
