Truly FedPsalm 107:9

The Fridge You Just Filled

This message is for the Tuesday evening you stand with the fridge door open on food you bought yourself, knowing that food is not what you came into the kitchen for and having no name for what is

The light comes on the way it always does, and the shelves are exactly as full as she left them on Saturday.

That is the part she keeps tripping over. She filled it. She wrote the list, she pushed the cart, she put the cold things in last the way her mother taught her, and on Saturday afternoon she stood right here with the door open and felt something close to proud. Yogurt in a row. Two kinds of cheese. The good bread with the seeds baked into the crust, because it had been a long week and she thought, why not.

It is Tuesday now. Ten past nine. The dishwasher is running its long cycle and the sound of it fills the apartment the way another person would. She came in here for something. She knows she did, because she got up off the sofa and walked the eleven steps and put her hand on the handle, and now she is standing in the cold light with the door wide open, and every single item in front of her is something she chose, carried up the stairs, and put away herself.

None of it is it.

She closes the door. Opens it again about forty seconds later, which is the part she would not tell anybody. Same shelves. Same yogurt. She is not hungry, not in the stomach sense. She ate at seven. Nothing has happened today worth reporting and nothing is wrong: her work is fine, her friends are fine, somebody sent her a photograph of a new baby this afternoon and she meant the heart she put underneath it.

And still. Eleven steps, a handle, a light, and this reaching in her with nothing at the end of it.

She has tried to name it before, standing right here. I want something to change. I want somebody to come home to. I want this year to be different. Each of those is true enough to say out loud and not one of them is the thing.

What frightens her is not the wanting. It is that she cannot find the bottom of it. A person is supposed to be able to say what they are hungry for. A person who cannot say it starts to suspect that the trouble is not the shelves at all. The trouble is her.

So she closes the door a second time and the kitchen goes dark except for the small green light on the microwave, and she stands there a moment longer in a room that is hers, in front of food she chose herself, with a hunger she has no name for.

The Shelves Are Not the Problem

The reaching is not a flaw in your character. You are hungry, and hungry is not a synonym for greedy, whatever tone of voice has been used on you about it. A woman standing at an open door at nine in the evening in front of food she chose herself is not a woman with poor manners. She is a woman whose hunger is larger than the shelves, and that is a measurement, not a verdict.

I am not going to guess what yours is, either, and there is one plain reason. The moment a want has a name on it you can hold it up beside somebody else's and start deciding whose was more reasonable, and that arithmetic is the exact thing keeping you standing at the door with the cold air on your face. So we will leave it unnamed and go underneath it instead.

Notice what she cannot do, because it matters more than it looks. She cannot say the word. That is not vagueness. It is information. Every appetite the body has comes with an address to go to: thirst knows where the faucet is, tiredness knows where the bed is. This one arrives with no name and no address, and it arrives anyway, in a perfectly ordinary kitchen on a perfectly ordinary Tuesday, which is how you know it was never generated by anything missing from that room.

You are carrying a hunger that was put in you on purpose, and it has been telling the truth about you every night you spent apologizing for it. I am not saying that to be kind to you. Psalm 107:9 sets the longing soul and the God who satisfies it inside the same short sentence, which means the longing was never the embarrassing part of the story, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written line like that and lays it down in front of a woman standing in a cold light at ten past nine.

Here is the sentence. Read it slowly, because the order inside it is doing the work.

For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.Psalm 107:9

He does not begin with the soul that has learned to need less, or with the person who has trained themselves down to a manageable size. He begins with the longing soul, and He does not require it to become some other kind of soul first. The longing is the qualification. The hunger is what He walks toward, not what He waits out.

You have a place in that sentence exactly as you are tonight, with the door open and nothing named. That is not a sentiment I am adding on top. The written word says He satisfies the longing soul, in the present tense, and it says He fills the hungry with good, and the Holy Spirit does not stand there waiting for you to produce a tidy list of what you want before He starts.

What You Came In For

Here is something worth turning over slowly, and I would rather hand it to you than argue it with you, because you did not come here at half past nine for a debate.

Every appetite you have corresponds to something real. Hunger exists, and so does bread. Thirst exists, and so does water. Loneliness exists, and so do other people. Appetites are not hallucinations. They are how a creature is told what it was made to receive.

So a creature turns up with one appetite that nothing in the visible world can meet. Not the shelves. Not the year. Not the person who came home. Every other hunger it has was matched by something that actually exists, and this one keeps opening the door at nine in the evening on a kitchen with everything in it. That is not a proof. It is a clue, and it is the size of a house.

You were made with an appetite the shelves cannot stock, and that is not a design fault in you. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says He has set eternity in the human heart, which is a written explanation for exactly what she is feeling with her hand on that shelf, and the Holy Spirit is the One who keeps that ache from quietly settling down into something small and manageable and dead.

That is why the naming never worked. She kept reaching for words the size of a grocery list, and every one of them was too short. The hunger is not oversized. The words were.

And then a man stood up in front of a crowd who had eaten bread out of His hands the day before and had come back the next morning wanting more, and He did not tell them they were greedy. He told them what they were actually hungry for.

You have the name for it tonight, and the name turns out to be a Person rather than a shelf. John 6:35 has Him saying it plainly, I am the bread of life, and He says it to people who had come back hungry the very next day, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes that written sentence and makes it land as an invitation instead of a rebuke.

That is the whole turn. Not a smaller appetite. A better table.

The breakthrough

I am not going to send you back to that kitchen with an insight. An insight is one more thing to hold, and you have held plenty of those, and you are still standing at the door with the cold air on your arms.

Something else is happening instead. A table is being laid in the room you are actually in, and my part is to hand you what is on it.

Receive this as a fact rather than as a feeling: the God who satisfies the longing soul already knows the name of what you came into the kitchen for. He is not holding it back until you can say it out loud. He is giving Himself, which is the only food that reaches as deep as the hunger goes, and He is giving it now, tonight, in a kitchen with a dishwasher running.

You are eating at a table God laid Himself, and the reaching was never the price of sitting down at it. Psalm 107:9 is a written promise made to a longing soul rather than a reward handed to a settled one, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying it the whole distance between a page and a person standing in a dark kitchen.

Take it. Not later, when you have thought about it more. Now, in the middle of the sentence, the way she took the bread out of the bag on Saturday without ceremony because she was going to eat it.

And let me say the honest thing about tomorrow, because I refuse to hand you a version of this that cannot survive Wednesday. The wanting may come back. It comes back to everybody still alive, and its return is not the failure of anything that happens tonight. A meal does not stop being a meal because you get hungry again. It is already yours, and a returning hunger has no right to stay in the room as evidence against you. The written word says He satisfies the longing soul, not that He takes it away and hands you back a smaller life, and the Holy Spirit keeps aiming that hunger at the only Person it fits.

You came into the kitchen for God. You did not have the word for it. He did, and He came.

Declare this over yourself

Before you speak, know where these come from. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority is delegated, it belongs to you because of Him, and it holds whether or not you feel anything while you say it. What He does with your evening is His to decide, and however He answers, the table in Psalm 107 is laid. Say them out loud, one at a time.

  1. Fridge door standing open, you are not what I came in here for, and you were never the size of this hunger. Psalm 107:9 says He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry with good, and I am eating from His hand tonight instead of foraging in front of you.
  2. Verdict that I am greedy, you are evicted in the name of Jesus. Scripture calls me a longing soul and never once a grasping one, and I am standing in that name in my own kitchen tonight.
  3. Lord, You are the God who satisfies the longing soul, and You laid this table before I ever found a word for what I came in for. Your word says You fill the hungry with good things and Your Spirit is the One setting it down in front of me, so I am sitting down, and I am eating, and I am done reaching past You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
