His TableExodus 25:30

The Seat I Kept for You

This message is for keeping a place at your own table for God for years and never once sitting down at His

She sets four places at a table that has needed three for eleven years.

It started as a small thing, the way most of the things that run a life start. Somebody said at a gathering once that it helps to keep a chair for the Lord, and she liked the idea enough to try it that same evening, and she has not missed an evening since. Knife, fork, folded napkin, and the blue enamel plate that came out of her mother's kitchen, set at the place by the window where the last of the light lands.

She does it before anything goes on the stove. That is the part she would tell you about if you asked. Not after, when there is a spare minute. Before, when the counter is still clear, because a guest is not an afterthought.

She says something toward the chair, most nights. Not a prayer exactly. More the sort of thing you say to a person in the next room while you are working, half over your shoulder, comfortable. Thank You for the day. It was a long one. The bus was late again.

Then she cooks. Then she serves the two who live with her and the one who comes on Wednesdays, and she fills their glasses, and she gets up twice for things nobody asked for because she saw they were needed. She is very good at this. She has been very good at this for a long time and nobody in that kitchen has ever had to ask her twice for anything.

And then she eats standing at the counter, with her hip against the drawer handle, out of a bowl she does not sit down with.

Every night. Eleven years.

If you asked her why, she would laugh and say she likes to keep moving, and there is some truth in that. But the truer thing is underneath, and she has never once said it out loud. Sitting down at that table, with the blue plate laid and the light coming in over it, feels like presuming. The chair is His. She keeps it for Him. To pull out one of the others and sit in it while His stands empty feels like taking a liberty with a guest she is trying to honor, and honoring Him is the whole point of the chair.

So she stands. She serves. She keeps the place. And in eleven years of setting a plate before the face of God every single evening, she has never once eaten a meal that somebody else put in front of her.

Her mother's blue plate goes back into the cupboard clean at the end of every night, and she washes it anyway, because it feels wrong to put an untouched thing away.

Perhaps that is your kitchen. You have kept a place for God for years, faithfully, before anything else went on the stove. You have been an excellent host. And you have never in your life sat down at His table and let Him carry something to you.

There was a table in the holy place, and it was not God's dinner

Let me take you into the tent, because everything this evening turns on one detail there that people walk straight past.

God gave Moses the plans for the holy place, and one of the first pieces of furniture He described was a table. Acacia wood, overlaid with gold, with a rim and rings and staves so it could travel. And then He said what was to go on it.

And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway.Exodus 25:30

Bread before His face, always. Twelve loaves, set out fresh every week, standing in the presence of God without interruption for as long as the tent stood and then for as long as the temple stood after it.

Now here is the detail. That bread was never eaten by God. It was set before His face, and then, at the end of its week, it was eaten by the priests, in the holy place, in His presence. The whole arrangement, the gold table and the staves and the fresh loaves and the standing order that the place was never to be empty, was a table where God's people ate in God's company. He supplied the setting. He supplied the standing. They did the eating.

You are welcome at a table you did not lay and are not responsible for keeping stocked. I am not softening anything for you. Exodus 25:30 has God Himself specifying the furniture and the bread and the always, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a line about acacia wood in a desert and stands it in a kitchen where a woman is eating out of a bowl against a drawer handle.

And when David wanted to say the whole of what God is to a person, he did not reach for a throne. He reached for a table. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Not thou permittest me to prepare one. He prepares it. The Shepherd is the host and the sheep is the guest, and the psalm does not need my help.

You have a place already laid for you, and the laying of it was finished long before you thought to keep one for Him. That is not my sentiment; Psalm 23:5 says He prepares the table, and the same Spirit who moved David to write the line is the One holding a chair out in your own kitchen tonight.

Keeping a place for Him is beautiful, and it is not the same as being fed

I want to be careful here, because there is nothing wrong with her chair. It is a lovely thing. Eleven years of setting a plate before the face of God, unasked, unwitnessed, is not a mistake and I will not call it one.

But it is hospitality, and hospitality is something you give. She has been giving for eleven years and receiving for none of them, and hunger does not care how generous you are. A person can starve inside their own good habits, and the habits are not the villain.

You were never assigned the role of host in this, and nobody promoted you to it. Scripture keeps handing the tray to God: He spreads the table, He anoints the head, He makes the cup run over, and the Spirit who inspired every one of those verbs did not leave a single one of them for us to do on our own behalf.

Watch what happens when Jesus meets people at a meal. In an upper room, on the last evening He had, He is the one who takes the bread and breaks it and gives it out. On a beach, at daybreak, after His friends had failed Him publicly, He is the one crouched over a charcoal fire with fish already cooking, saying come and have breakfast. He does not wait to be served. He does not accept the position of guest even when the room is full of people who would have been glad to give it to Him.

You are the one He is carrying something to, and there is nothing presumptuous about being on the receiving end of it. John 21 has Him cooking breakfast for men who had run out on Him, which settles the question of whether a person has to earn the plate, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes an old written breakfast smell like it is happening in your kitchen tonight.

And I will say plainly what this page is not asking of you. It is not asking you to stop setting the fourth place. Keep the blue plate. Keep the napkin. Keep saying things over your shoulder to the chair by the window, because that is real and He hears it. You are being invited to add a chair, not to take one away. Psalm 23:5 says the cup runs over, which is not the vocabulary of a God who is trying to reduce what is on your table, and the Spirit is not in the business of talking anybody's appetite down.

The breakthrough

So sit down.

Not instead of the chair you keep. Beside it. Pull out one of the ordinary chairs at your own table, the one nearest whatever you were going to eat standing up, and put yourself in it, all the way down, back against the back of it.

And then, before you touch the food, say this out loud in whatever words are yours: I have been the host here for years and I am the guest tonight. Then stay in the chair long enough for it to be true. That is the receiving, and it is smaller and stranger than most of us expect, and almost everybody stands back up too early.

You are being served right now, at your own table, by the Shepherd who prepared it. Psalm 23:5 says He prepares a table in the presence of enemies, which means the room does not have to be peaceful for the meal to be laid, and the Holy Spirit is the One who sets a written psalm down in a kitchen at eight in the evening as though it had been waiting for that hour.

It is already yours. The place was not laid on the condition that you stop serving other people, or that you learn to sit still, or that you feel worthy of the chair by the time you reach it. Exodus 25:30 says the bread stands before His face always, and the Spirit is not waiting on an improvement in you before He points at the seat.

And keep the fourth place if you love it. You are holding a good habit that never once fed you, and both of those things are true at the same time. The written word gives you a Host, not a job, and the Spirit is the One who takes the tray out of your hands gently enough that you barely notice it going.

Declare this over yourself

You are not asking permission and you are not making a request. You are in Christ, and the seat at that table was given to you by the Host Himself, not earned by eleven years of setting places for Him. What He does at the meal is His to decide, and however He answers, the table is prepared and you are the one it was prepared for. Say these out loud, sitting down.

  1. Fourth place I set every evening, you are a kindness and you were never the meal. Exodus 25:30 says the bread stands before His face always, and I am sitting down at the table He laid instead of standing guard over the one I laid.
  2. Rule that says I must serve to belong, you were never written over me. In the name of Jesus I take you off my chair, and I am eating what the Shepherd carried to me.
  3. Lord, You are the Host and I am Your guest tonight, and I am sitting all the way down. Your word says You prepare a table before me and my cup runs over, so I am letting go of the tray and receiving what is already on the plate.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
