The Same Ocean, Different Boats

This message is for the ache of watching people from your own place appear to be given more of it than you were

She is sitting on a bollard at the end of the harbor wall with the light coming in low off the water, and twenty feet away the people she grew up with are telling each other good news.

She can hear all of it. That is the harbor for you. Sound comes across the water and off the concrete and there is nowhere on that wall you can sit and not hear a group of people being happy. Her cousin is in the middle of it with her hands going, and somebody's husband is laughing at the end of the story before it finishes, and the little ones are running the length of the dock and being called back.

The news is good. She means that. She heard it and the first thing that happened in her was gladness, real gladness, the kind you do not have to work up, because she has known that cousin since they were both small enough to be carried down this same wall.

And then, about four seconds behind the gladness, the other thing. The drop. Low down, under the ribs, quiet and familiar as an old key in a pocket.

Same town. Same water. Same grandmother, more or less. Same church, the one at the top of the hill with the roof they are always fixing. They prayed some of the same prayers, out loud, in the same room, at the same age. And her cousin's boat came in the way you see it come in, and hers came in the way hers comes in, and nobody did anything wrong, and there is the drop.

She would not say any of this out loud. Not for anything. She would rather be caught doing almost any other thing than caught counting, and the counting is exactly what she is doing, and she has been doing it a long time.

Since she was eighteen, if she is honest. There has been a tally running in her since a night on this dock when four of them sat with their legs over the edge and said out loud what their lives were going to be. Nobody has ever seen the tally. She keeps it the way you keep a habit you are ashamed of, which means she keeps it constantly and never looks straight at it.

And here is the part that would surprise the people twenty feet away, who love her and think of her as the steady one. She is not bitter. She would put herself in front of a train for that cousin. She has cried with actual joy at three separate pieces of that woman's good news over the years, and the crying was not performance.

The drop and the gladness are both real and they arrive together, and nobody ever taught her what to do with two true things at once.

So she sits on the bollard and looks at the water, which is doing what it does, moving under all the boats at once, the same ocean under every hull on that wall. And somewhere in her, older and quieter than the tally, is the thing she has never once said in words:

Did I get less.

Nobody is going to scold you for looking

Let me get one thing out of the way, because a great deal of writing on this subject begins by making the reader feel dirty and I am not going to do that to you.

You looked because you are alive. Human beings are made to notice each other and to want the good they see, and that noticing is the same faculty that lets you rejoice at a wedding and weep at a funeral. It does not have an off switch and it is not supposed to. The person who does not notice what other people have been given is not holier than you. They are further away.

So no lecture is coming. The drop under your ribs is not evidence of a bad heart. It is evidence of a heart that was built to want, sitting in a place where wanting has been given a scoreboard.

Now here is the sentence Paul wrote about it, and it has been badly served by people who quote half of it.

But godliness with contentment is great gain.1 Timothy 6:6

The word underneath our word contentment is not a mood and it is not a smaller appetite. It is autarkeia, and it means sufficiency, a supply that is actually adequate, the state of having what you need on board rather than needing to put in somewhere to get it. It was used of a place that did not have to import. It is a word about supply, not about lowering expectations, and Paul does not use it to tell anybody to want less. He uses it to do arithmetic in their favor. Godliness with a supply like that, he says, is great gain. Gain. He is telling them they are up, not that they should learn to be at peace with being down.

You are carrying a supply that came aboard with God Himself, and it is not issued in proportion to anyone else's. I am not saying that to soothe you. 1 Timothy 6:6 puts sufficiency and godliness in the same hand and calls the pair great gain, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written word about sufficiency and makes it real in a person sitting on a bollard doing arithmetic she is ashamed of.

And notice where a scoreboard fails as an instrument. A scoreboard can only compare like with like, so it can tell you whose boat is fuller and it cannot tell you what is in the water under both of them. Paul's word is about what is under you and with you, and no tally you have ever kept has had a column for that, which is why the tally has never once made you feel better and never will.

You have a sufficiency that no comparison can measure, and it did not get smaller when the good news went to somebody else. That is 1 Timothy 6:6 and not my encouragement, and His Spirit is the One who lets a woman on a harbor wall hear that as a fact about herself rather than as a thing she is being told to believe.

What is that to thee

There is a moment at the end of John's Gospel that I love, because Jesus handles this exactly and He handles it without one word of shame.

It is the morning on the beach with the fire and the fish. Jesus has just restored Peter, three times over, one for each denial, and told him plainly what it is going to cost him. And Peter, with the sea right there and the ashes still warm, turns around, sees John following, and says: Lord, and what shall this man do?

That is our question. That is the harbor wall, word for word. Same fire, same Lord, same morning, and Peter is already looking sideways to see how the other man's portion compares.

And look at what Jesus does not do. He does not rebuke the affection. He does not tell Peter his heart is rotten. He gives him one sentence, and the sentence is a redirection and not a scolding.

Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.John 21:22

Follow thou me. The emphasis in the Greek falls on the you. As if to say: his path is mine to assign and it is not the measure of yours, and the only thing on this beach that has your name on it is the following.

You are being spoken to personally by a Lord who assigns portions by name, and yours was never a leftover from somebody else's. John 21:22 has Him saying follow thou me to one man with his head turned, and the Holy Spirit is the One who says the same to a woman on a wall without a single word of contempt in it.

And I want you to see the kindness in the way He does it, because the tone matters as much as the content. He does not say stop caring about John. He says what is that to thee, which is not a rebuke but a measurement question, and He answers it Himself. It is nothing to you. It cannot be added to your portion or taken out of it. It is simply not the same account.

You were given a portion measured out to you by name, and the size of it is settled and is not up for renegotiation against anybody on that dock. Scripture says the Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup in Psalm 16:5, and the Spirit is the One who makes a written portion feel like something in your hands rather than something in a book.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true on the harbor wall, with the good news going on twenty feet away and the light low off the water.

You are held by a God who is Himself your portion, and He is with you in your own boat tonight, not waiting in the better one. Psalm 16:5 says the Lord is the portion of mine inheritance, and 1 Timothy 6:6 calls godliness with sufficiency great gain, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries both of those out of the page and onto a piece of cold concrete at the end of a dock.

Now receive something, and let it be plain. What is in your boat tonight is yours, given, measured to you by name, and it did not arrive because somebody else's arrived first or in spite of it. There is no bookkeeping between the two. The good news your cousin got came out of the same generous hand that has been putting things in your boat all along, and that hand has not been rationing you in order to fund her.

Take it in. Not as a consolation prize. As the actual assignment of an actual God who knows your name and did not confuse you with anybody.

And the standing to receive that is yours already. You are in Christ, and Christ is in you, and the portion came with Him. You have that portion right now, given and not pending, and the tally has no right to stay on the wall with you. Scripture calls Him the portion of your cup, and the Spirit is the One who turns a written inheritance into something you are actually holding on an ordinary evening.

I am not going to tell you the drop will not come back. It may. There will be other good news, and other people from your own town, and the low familiar note under your ribs may sound again next month. That would not mean tonight did not take, and it is not evidence of a bad heart. It would mean you are a person who notices, in a world with a scoreboard in it, and the God who made the noticing has never once called it greed.

What is settled is this. The same ocean is under every hull on that wall, and He is your portion, and He is in your boat.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with your hands flat. The right to say them was given when Christ took you as His own, and you speak from inside Him, because Christ is in you and you are in Him. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries them, not how well you have managed your reaction to somebody's good news. The first line speaks to the news itself. The second speaks to the sentence you would be embarrassed to say out loud. The third turns and speaks to God. What He does with next month is His and I leave the outcome to Him, and nothing here promises the drop is gone for good.

  1. News that came to somebody else, you are not a verdict on my boat. 1 Timothy 6:6 says godliness with sufficiency is great gain, and I am carrying a supply you cannot measure and did not issue.
  2. Sentence that says I was passed over, you were never spoken over me by the Father, and I put you off this wall in the name of Jesus. His word says the Lord is the portion of my cup, and His Spirit is the One who measured mine out by name.
  3. Lord, You are my portion and my boat has You in it, exactly as Psalm 16:5 says. You told a man with his head turned to follow You, and You said it without contempt, and I am putting my hands flat and following.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
